Differences are growing among mobile operator lobbies over a government proposal to introduce an 11-digit access code in place of the existing 10-digit code from January 2010 for mobile services to accommodate a rapidly growing subscriber base.
Meanwhile, the government has also amended the national numbering plan to allow sub-levels of 8 to be used [...]

India’s top mobile phone company Bharti Airtel announced Friday it had crossed the 100-million subscriber mark and expected to double that number within the next three years.
India is the world’s fastest-growing mobile market, driven by the cheapest tariffs globally of less than two cents a minute. Source

India is now world’s second biggest market after the USA in terms of subscriber base for CDMS based mobile services. The CDMA Development Group (CDG) announced that India has now over 100 million subscribers on the CDMA platform.
RCom and TTSL are now ranked among the world’s top 5 CDMA operators. Source

The decision of Indian and South African cell-phone giants Bharti Airtel and MTN to revive their merger talks to creating a US$61 billion behemoth - the world’s third-largest telecom company - by no means indicates that India’s largest-ever transnational deal will survive the hurdles ahead.
These include raising as much as $4 billion in bridging finance [...]

According to the CDMA Development Group (CDG), there are now over 100 million CDMA subscribers in India, making it the world’s second-largest CDMA market. CDG made this announcement at an event in Mumbai on Thursday.
While announcing this achievement, Perry LaForge, CDG’s executive director said, “It’s a very important day to celebrate not only in [...]

We here at Engadget Mobile tend to spend a lot of way too much time poring over the latest FCC filings, be it on the net or directly on the ol’ Federal Communications Commission’s site. Since we couldn’t possibly (want to) cover all the stuff that goes down there, we’ve gathered up all the raw info you may want (but probably don’t need). Enjoy!

It’s time for HTC’s Touch Pro2 to join the ranks of every other modern phone in getting its own unboxing video. An enthusiastic PocketNow has the honors, and even goes so far as to utilize the infamous “smell test” to confirm it is in fact a genuine leather case included. Sized up to the original Touch Pro, it’s got a more spread out keyboard, larger screen and thinner form factor — all welcome additions, if you ask us. We can’t imagine it being a deal breaker, but just so you know, the slide-out tilt doesn’t go as extreme as its predecessor in that form factor, HTC’s Titan. Living vicariously through video can be accomplished after the break — it’s not yet available stateside, but if you can’t wait, there’s always import.

Are you dying to see Nokia’s latest, the N97 ripped to shreds in glorious moving pictures? Well, that’s too bad: we don’t have that. What we do have, however, is a series of photographs of said shred-ripping, turned into a video. A creepy, silent film, if you will, complete with subtitles. Lack of movement and sound aside, it gives us a pretty great look at the innards of the handset, if that’s what you’re into. Sure, it’s not The Goldrush, but if you want to see the N97 in a talkie, there’s always that Royksopp video, right? Full video after the break.

[Thanks, Mike]

The Egs HiPhone Nano F210 borrows some of the aura of… well, the Aura. And why not? Half the fun of the KIRF scene is the way that these bandits mix and match aspects of devices according to whatever crazy whim they might be experiencing at the moment. (The other half of the fun? Exploding batteries, of course.) Along with the stylish and quite possibly functional iPod click wheel, this bad boy features: tri-band GSM, a 1.4-inch screen, VGA camera, Bluetooth A2DP, FM tuner, and some sort of media player. As China Grabber puts it: “This is tailor-made for small girls in mobile phones, will the pursuit of individuality, culture, dare to do you a taste of delicacy!!!” Yours today for $139.99. If you’re feeling lucky (or you’ve done something wrong in your past) hit that read link and see for yourself.

An incredible way to start the weekend, Storm owners: Verizon is finally pulling the trigger on a firmware update, which will be available to all comers starting on Sunday at 3PM Eastern time. If that’s too much trouble, you’ll alternatively be able to sit back, chill, and wait for the over-the-air version to hit, which should follow on at 10PM. Verizon tells us that it’ll be releasing 4.7.0.148, as rumored — just a tiny bump from the failed build 141 that had been rumored before that, but all told, far, far too long since the last official update was rolled out. We can only assume this has been tested better than a NASA launch at this point, so you’re on notice, guys.

Like this thing? We hope you don’t — or if you do, we hope you’re on Vodafone, because that’s the only way you’re going to get it, it seems. The Nokia 6730 Classic candybar is an interesting device in that Voda intends to launch it globally across its entire wireless footprint, bringing turn-by-turn navigation and S60 to a wide audience spanning multiple continents and target demographics. It’s also got a 3.2 megapixel AF cam, the usual microSD expansion, and a 2.2-inch display, all launching next month for an undisclosed (but we imagine very reasonable) price.

We’d say that Best Buy’s phone pricing is never a set-in-stone indication of the price you’ll pay direct from the carrier, but it’s probably pretty safe to assume from these tags that everyone — Rogers, Best Buy, Future Shop, you name it — will be charging within a few bucks of CAD $149.99 ($135) for your choice of the Dream or Magic when the Android sets launch on June 2. That’s not too terribly bruising on the pocketbook, but that’s going to be on a three-year contract with a minimum $45 voice / data plan; if you step down to a two-year deal, you jump all the way up to a whopping $449.99, and a contract-free purchase is going to set you back $599.99. Tell you what, Rogers: give us both the black and the white Dream for $450 on a two-year and you’ve got yourselves a deal. Sound good?

Rogers’ HTC Dream and Magic coming in at $149 through Best Buy? originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Fri, 29 May 2009 10:06:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Ready for your daily dose of obvious? Good. After Verizon Wireless CEO Lowell McAdam proudly proclaimed that America’s largest mobile operator would be painting the Palm Pre red “in about six months,” Sprint has come forward to make sure we know that said statement is probably right on the money. According to Sprint spokesman James Fisher: “We have the Pre through 2009.” Short, sweet and chock full of pent-up rage. ‘Course, six months after the Pre’s launch on Sprint lands us in December, giving VZW just enough time to cripple the phone’s hottest features and push it out before Valentine’s Day. Sounds pretty reasonable, no?

Sprint affirms Palm Pre exclusivity “through 2009″ originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Fri, 29 May 2009 10:01:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.
